California's Energy & Environmental Future

California's Energy & Environmental Future

Presentation by Dan Kalb, California Policy Director, Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS)

The Union of Concerned Scientists is the leading science-based nonprofit working for a healthy environment and a safer world. UCS combines independent scientific research and citizen action to develop innovative, practical solutions and to secure responsible changes in government policy, corporate practices, and consumer choices.

UCS played a critical role in helping Californians to understand the serious impact of climate change, and in the state legislature UCS’s analysis was instrumental in getting the votes needed to pass groundbreaking global warming legislation.

This program will cover:

  • UCS activities in California and the nation
  • Overview of California’s Energy & Environmental Future
  • Discussion of CARB’s recent Zero Emission Vehicle and Auto greenhouse gas emission standards

As the Union of Concerned Scientists’ (UCS) California policy coordinator, Dan Kalb spends most of his time working with state legislators, regulators, civic leaders, and other environmental groups promoting clean vehicles, renewable energy, and global warming legislation in California. His focus is working with the State Legislature and relevant state agencies to implement strong policies to reduce heat-trapping greenhouse gas emissions and promote a thriving clean tech economy in California.

Mr. Kalb received his bachelor’s degree in Conservation of Natural Resources from the University of California at Berkeley, and has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of San Francisco. Mr. Kalb lives in Oakland with his wife and has been active in Oakland and the East Bay as a policy advisor and community service volunteer.
