A&WMA Student Scholarships, Sponsorships & Awards

  GOLDEN WEST SECTION STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

Each year, the Golden West Section Scholarship Committee selects one or more graduate or undergraduate students as recipients of the Golden West Section annual scholarship. The selection is made on the basis of a detailed application including a statement of goals, academic transcripts, research and community accomplishments, and letters of recommendations. In recent years, our Section has offered up to $3,500 in scholarship funding for selected finalists. Candidates attend colleges and universities within the Golden West Section's geographic boundaries. Each of the Golden West Section scholarship recipients also receives a 1-year Student Membership to the International Air and Waste Management Association.

GOLDEN WEST SECTION SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WINNERS

The Officers and Board of the Golden West section awarded three 2009 Scholarship Awards to: Ms. Yu-Ting Huang, a Ph.D. candidate in UC Berkeley’s Department of Environmental Science, Policy & Management; Mr. Ethan Aumann, a Ph.D. candidate in Environmental Science at Stanford University; and Mr. Kyle Shimabuku, an M.S. candidate in Environmental Engineering at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) San Luis Obispo. Ms. Huang’s doctoral research at UC Berkeley focuses on water cycle modeling and its implications to water resource management and environmental protection. Her interests include optimal combination of environmental conservation and economic development. Mr. Aumann’s doctoral research at Stanford involves the measurement and modeling of physiochemical properties of organic atmospheric aerosols. He has interests in the effect of anthropogenic aerosols on the Earth’s climate as well as sustainable energy systems. Mr. Shimabuku begins his M.S. studies in Environmental Engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in Spring 2010. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from San Diego State University. His interests include development of new technologies in wastewater treatment, such as improved water reclamation and production of biofuels. He spent four months as a volunteer aid/relief engineer in the Southern Sudan, Africa.

In the previous year, the Golden West Section 2008 Scholarship Award was awarded to Ms. Emily Humphreys, a graduate student at Stanford’ in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Ms. Humpherys received her Bachelor's degree from Stanford University’s interdisciplinary Earth Systems program. The focus of Emily's work at Stanford is on energy and climate change mitigation.

The Golden West Section plans to provide one or more scholarship awards again in 2010 for students attending colleges or universities in the Section's geographic area. The Deadline for submittal of applications will be December 31, 2010. The link below was for the 2009 scholarship application. Please check back later in the year for the updated AWMA-GWS Scholarship Application for 2010.

  STUDENT PROGRAM SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The Golden West Section of A&WMA is seeking grants or sponsorship of $1,000 to $5,000 for university student scholarships and annual meeting activities, and for updating A&WMA environmental education teaching materials for Grades 6-12 that will be distributed to schools in our region and around the country. Sponsors will have their company identity specifically named in association with the selected activity. Details follow below:

SPONSORING STUDENTS TO PRESENT PAPERS AT THE ANNUAL MEETING

In an effort to encourage greater overall participation by students and young professionals, A&WMA has asked each Section to sponsor about five (5) students to attend the Annual Convention & Exhibition. With the support of their professors, the sponsored students will be presenting full Technical Session and/or Poster Session presentations, and will be competing for Student Paper Awards or A&WMA International Scholarship Awards. The total cost for each student attendee is expected to be about $800, including airfare, and the use of local college dormitory accommodations.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION RESOURCE GUIDES (EERGs)

Since the early 1990s, A&WMA has offered an environmental science curriculum for teachers and students on the topics of Air Quality and Non-Point Source Pollution Prevention. Each of the two sets of "EERGs" contain instructions for teachers, and a series of 15 environmental science experiments designed to teach scientific principles tailored for children in specific age groups (Grades K-12). An EERG QuickTutor Kit and Presenters Manual are also offered. Sponsored workshops have been held around the country staffed by practicing environmental professionals to demonstrate the lessons and concepts to local teachers and principals. The program has been recognized with seven national awards. Under an earlier grant from the Toyota Corporation, the hardcopy versions of the EERGs for Grades K through 5 were converted to executable PowerPoint files (with lesson attachments) on CD-ROM. At this time, there is an urgent need for grants and/or sponsors to allow A&WMA to hire professional assistance to update the content of the Grades 6-12 Air Quality lesson plans (now about 15 years old). These lessons would also be converted to CD-ROM format. A&WMA's price for distribution of the CD's is now about $15 apiece. This price covers the cost of CD production and attached literature, but not the extra, one-time costs of content updates and CD conversion. The contents of the entire 10 volume set are:
